TL;DR

  • MAGI ARTS chose Yu-Gi-Oh! and Touhou Project, two popular franchises with historically few figures. Its Dark Magician Girl answered a long-running gap for fans.
  • Tang Weijie's predecessor painting workshop opened in Dongguan in 2014 and sharpened its craft on commissions including HobbyMax's Evangelion projects. MAGI ARTS itself formally registered in Chongqing in 2020, and detailed paintwork and color transitions became central to its identity.
  • The Arahito-gishin mythological originals and the PURE line balance licensed characters with designs created in collaboration with illustrators. Prices run from 8,800 to 35,200 yen ($60-$235 USD).

From Painting Workshop to Brand

Before MAGI ARTS was a brand, it was a painting workshop. Founder Tang Weijie operated a studio called Tang out of Dongguan starting in summer 2014, building the team's skills by painting figures for HobbyMax's Evangelion projects, alongside Girls' Frontline and Inuyasha commissions.

The brand formally registered in July 2020 in Chongqing and debuted at WonderFestival 2020 Shanghai, a major figure convention. A Japanese entity in Edogawa-ku, Tokyo, handles the Japanese market. The PURE line manages original figures and collaborations with illustrators.

Yu-Gi-Oh! and Touhou Fill Gaps in the Figure Market

Yu-Gi-Oh! and Touhou Project both have passionate, large fanbases but historically had relatively few figures. MAGI ARTS released Dark Magician Girl, Dark Magician, and Yugi Muto while building a broad Touhou catalog.

The Arahito-gishin Series takes a different direction, turning mythological creature imagery into original character figures by illustrators Neco, DSmile, and Oouso. Licensed characters from Dungeon Meshi and Spy x Family extend the catalog into franchises that have historically seen few figure options.

Painting Experience Shows in the Details

If Yu-Gi-Oh! or Touhou is your franchise, MAGI ARTS is producing figures those fanbases waited years for. The Dark Magician Girl figure alone drew attention from fans who had waited years for another version.

The painting-workshop origins show in the product. Across the 8,800 to 35,200 yen ($60-$235 USD) range, detail work and color transitions remain central to the presentation.
